Budget Mid-Range Android Phone 2020: OnePlus Nord

By | 03/08/2020

The Oneplus Nord was launched on 21st July, and many people with invitations were able to purchase this before the open sales date tomorrow on 4th Aug.

The phone is lightweight and thin, giving a premium feel and comes in two colours – bright Marble Blue and Grey Onyx.

Let’s take a look at Oneplus Nord’s features:

Flagship camera

The 48 MP primary sensor is built from the OnePlus 8, with a total of four rear cameras (48MP+8MP+2MP+5MP) and two front cameras (32MP+8MP). The optical image stabilization (OIS) eliminates blur and shakiness from every photo.

Nightscape mode was first introduced on the Oneplus 6T. It makes use of machine learning engine to improve the photos taken in the dark, enhancing and delivering more lifelike and sharp images. The Nightscape mode was later upgraded on the OnePlus 7 Pro, and although it is not as good as the Pixel’s Night Sight mode, it does an impressive job in the dark.

Dual selfie camera lens

The OnePlus Nord has a 105-degree ultra-wide-angle lens on its secondary front-facing camera, this enable more to fit in the frame within an arm’s length.

OxygenOS 10.5 – the latest operating system that is already available on the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro.

90 Hz AMOLED – bright, colourful 6.44-inch display screen with fast, smooth refresh rate. This ensures a fluid scrolling performance at all time.

Snapdragon 756G is one of the mid-range processors that comes with an integrated 5G modem, launched by Qualcomm in late 2019.

Compared to the normal Snapdragon 765, the 765G is optimized for gaming. This means the graphics card is higher clocked and the chip also supports additional software features.

The Warp Charge 30T allows the phone to top up from zero to 70% in just 30 minutes.

Pros:

  • Oneplus Nord has premium designs and plenty of camera features.
  • The price is excellent value with some flagship qualities!
  • Latest Oneplus software, same as their newest models.
  • 5G ready.

Cons:

  • The battery life is average – it is better than iPhone SE, but not as good as Oneplus 8 or the 8 pro.
  • It has No IP rating for water resistance.
  • Only a single speaker at the bottom of the phone (like all Oneplus phones up to 6T)
  • No wireless charging.

Availability

The phone will be available in the UK and 27 other European countries, plus India, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

It is not stated whether it will be released in the US, or other markets around the world.

How much does it cost?

The price starts at £379/€399 for the 8GB of RAM / 128GB storage model, which is very reasonable and £469/€499 for the 12GB of RAM / 256GB storage model.

The 8GB model is cheaper than iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy A51 5G, Mi Note 10, LG Velvet and Motorola Edge, but it is not as cheap as the Pixel 4a – which has just been announced today.
